As far as stand mixers go, there’s one brand that will not disappoint—KitchenAid. This company’s stand mixers are so top-notch that, with the right attachment, you can make virtually anything right in your kitchen. But at the end of the day, is it safe to place the KitchenAid bowl and attachments inside a dishwasher?
All of KitchenAid’s bowls and coated attachments are dishwasher safe, except for the wire whisk and burnished beaters. You will need to wash these attachments by hand to prevent them from warping in shape.
After searching for this answer, we grew more curious about KitchenAid bowls and attachments, so we researched whether they’re safe to insert in a microwave, safe to grease up, and a ton of other maintenance-related issues you can learn down below.
Are KitchenAid Attachments and Bowls Dishwasher Safe?
Did you recently purchase a KitchenAid stand mixer? If you have, welcome to the club? You’re going to enjoy the heck out of your new stand mixer, especially if you love whipping up fresh pizza, bread, cookies, and even ice cream—provided you have the right accessory!
However, if you purchased a standard stand mixer without splurging on high-tech accessories, you’ll only receive the stand mixer unit, a mixing bowl, and three attachments (flat beater, dough hook, and wire whip).
But when all is said and done, and your kitchen sink is full of your KitchenAid attachments, do you have to wash them by hand or can you place them inside your dishwasher?
The excellent news is, yes, you can place the bowl and all 3 attachments inside your dishwasher! They are made of corrosive-resistant materials that can withstand hot and cold gushes of water directly inside the machine!
However, you should be extremely careful with the wire whisk attachment. This tool is comprised of several delicate wires that intertwine with each other to create a bulbous beater. You will use it to introduce air into all sorts of wonderful ingredients.
Due to its delicate design, placing it inside a dishwasher might not be the best thing to do, especially if you don’t want to end up with a wire whisk with sharp bends.
If you do want to place the whisk inside our dishwasher, I recommend removing every dish and piece of cutlery. That way, there will be no risk of anything falling on the wires and warping them out of shape.
If that sounds like too much trouble, wash the wire whisk by hand. It only takes a few seconds, and you can use a sponge to clean around the entire surface of each individual wire.
What KitchenAid Attachment Cannot Go in a Dishwasher?
There are certain parts of a KitchenAid stand mixer that cannot go inside a dishwasher.
For instance, you should leave the stand mixer unit outside the dishwasher and only wipe it down with a slightly moistened cloth after each use. Also, large attachments like ice cream makers, pasta rollers, etc., should be hand-washed.
Also, something worth noting is that KitchenAid offers burnished beaters, which are made of polished aluminum.
Unlike the coated beaters that come in most KitchenAid stand mixer sets, burnished beaters do not belong in the dishwasher. Instead, you should soak the beaters in a bowl in the sink to dissolve any food remnants before soaping, scrubbing, rinsing, and drying them.
Are Glass KitchenAid Mixer Bowls Dishwasher Safe?
Some KitchenAid stand mixer versions will come with a stainless-steel bowl, while others will have a glass bowl. Both are basically interchangeable, but the glass bowl looks a lot prettier, in my opinion.
Anyway, is a glass KitchenAid mixer bowl safe to wash inside a dishwasher? Again, yes, it is.
The glass mixing bowl is made of a high-grade, ultra-durable type of glass that is resistant to heat and odors. Best of all, the glass can withstand extreme temperatures, so you can wash them in a dishwasher without worry.
However, you should consider placing the glass mixing bowl on the top-most rack or at least keep everything away from the top of the bowl. That way, you reduce the risk of anything falling into the bowl and possibly cracking the glass.
Can You Place KitchenAid Bowls Inside Microwaves?
Now, what if you want to melt a few sticks of butter inside a KitchenAid mixing bowl? Can you do this by stuffing the bowl inside a microwave?
Except for the stainless-steel mixing bowl, yes, you can. KitchenAid’s glass and ceramic mixing bowls are completely microwave safe, so softening butter and melting chocolate can be done directly inside these handy bowls.
If your KitchenAid stand mixer came with a metal bowl, under no circumstances should you try to put it in the microwave. Some people say you can microwave large pieces of metal, such as a mixing bowl, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
How to Clean a KitchenAid Stand Mixer?
Let’s say you’ve just finished whipping up a batch of fresh homemade chocolate chip cookies. Now that you want to put your KitchenAid stand mixer away, how do you clean the unit?
It’s pretty straightforward but also a little time-consuming. Follow these steps and your KitchenAid mixer will remain as good as new for years to come.
Unplug the stand mixer—We are going to expose the unit to a bit of water in the following steps, so make sure there isn’t any electricity flowing into the machine, or you’ll be sorry.
Detach the mixing bowl and beaters—Read the product’s manual on how you can attach and detach the bowl and accessories.
Place them on the side and prepare them for the dishwasher (wash burnished beaters and wire whisks by hand).
Wipe down the mixer unit with a microfiber cloth or paper towel—The cloth or paper towel shouldn’t be dripping wet. Run it under some cold water and wring until it until it’s only slightly moist to the touch. Wipe the entire unit from top to bottom, including the bottom of the base.
Remove caked-on stains with baking soda—There will be times when your stand mixer will have bits of caked-on ingredients all over the mixing unit.
To get rid of them, add a pinch or two of baking soda on the moistened cloth or paper towel and gently dab at the stains. Wait for up to 10 minutes before wiping the baking soda off with a fresh cloth or paper towel.
Use a toothpick to remove gunk from all the nooks and crannies—Lift the stand mixer’s head up to reveal the shaft.
Using a toothpick or bamboo skewer, gently prod away any solid bits of old food until it’s perfectly clean. Give the entire unit a thorough wipe-down before stowing it away.
