Can you play Arma 3 single-player? Yes, absolutely! - 33rd Square (2024)

The short answer is – yes, Arma 3 fully supports and provides tons of content for single player and solo play! You do not need to be online or join multiplayer to enjoy what this military simulator offers. Let‘s take a deep dive into the many ways you can experience Arma 3‘s massive battlefield sandbox alone.

As an Arma veteran with thousands of hours under my belt, I‘ve had a blast playing Arma 3 solo over the years. The devs at Bohemia Interactive have packed the game with features for lone warriors. You get complete control over the experience, be it fast-paced combat, thoughtful stealth, or commanding AI squads against enemy forces. Mods expand things even further allowing for dynamic campaigns and near endless replayability.

While multiplayer might have more visibility, Arma 3‘s single player and solo potential cannot be understated. This guide will illustrate all the options at your disposal to enjoy Arma 3 on your own. Let‘s get started!

Immersive scripted campaigns

Arma 3 incorporates 3 major single player story campaigns, each taking place across the series‘ authentic large-scale maps. These present memorable combat scenarios against intelligent AI enemies. With cutscenes, voice acting and a narrative linking the missions, they feel closer to a story mode in other shooters.

The East Wind

This is the original campaign that released with Arma 3. Set in 2035 on the islands of Altis and Stratis, NATO forces are withdrawing after a peacekeeping mission, only to get suddenly drawn into a war with occupying CSAT troops.

You take on the role of Corporal Ben Kerry in this 5 episode campaign. Some highlights include:

  • Gathering intel about CSAT movements to aid your evacuation. This has some great stealth elements.
  • Extracting a defecting CSAT officer before getting overwhelmed. Escort missions are always tense!
  • Assaulting a submarine base with the full might of combined arms – armor, air support and infantry.

With options to approach objectives in different ways, diverse locales like cities, bases and forests, and relentlessly aggressive CSAT AI, the East Wind campaign remains one of my favorites after hundreds of hours in Arma 3.

Apex Protocol

Added in the Apex expansion, this spins a new scenario on the Tanoa map. Your special forces team gets stranded on a tropical island chain in the Pacific. Amidst the turmoil, a new emerging faction has seized Chinese research facilities and you need to contain this threat.

Some key moments include:

  • Tracking down and rescuing comrades scattered after your helicopter crash lands. The open jungle terrain makes this challenging.
  • Liberating towns and strategically gaining a foothold on the islands. The urban combat here is intense.
  • Assaulting island bases to uncover intel about the mysterious new antagonists.

With the lush tropical setting, Apex Protocol is a welcome change from East Wind‘s Mediterranean environments. The mission variety and evolving narrative keep things engaging through all 7 episodes.

Contact

The most recent Arma 3 expansion Contact brings an alien twist to the formula. Set in the Livonia terrain, bizarre extraterrestrial creatures begin emerging from the sea to terrorize local populations. With civilians to rescue and an unprecedented enemy to confront, Contact makes for a unique solo experience.

Some highlights:

  • Surviving the initial waves of alien creatures swarming over towns and bases. These tense opening missions capture the desperation and chaos superbly.
  • Venturing into alien nests and structures to plant explosives. The otherworldly atmospheres are fantastic.
  • Mounting raids on alien held territories to reclaim them for humans. Fighting back against the extraterrestrial invaders is extremely cathartic.

While Contact‘s 5 episodes are slightly shorter, the refreshing setting and survival elements make this a must play campaign for any Arma 3 player.

Hundreds of singleplayer scenarios

Aside from the campaigns with their structured narratives and hand crafted levels, Arma 3 also provides hundreds of user made singleplayer missions across diverse themes:

ThemeDescription
InfantryFocusing on ground combat between enemy and friendly AI forces.
ArmoredUsing tanks, APCs and IFVs in large scale combined arms warfare.
Air AssaultParadropping troops and providing air support to ground forces.
Spec OpsStealth missions relying on covert infiltration rather than direct force.
SurvivalScavenging supplies and escaping from difficult situations like being stranded or imprisoned.
Science FictionAliens, zombies, superheroes and more – build any scenario you can imagine!
HistoricalFrom World War 2 to modern day, recreate pivotal battles and operations from human history.
City LifeTake a break from combat and immerse in civilian scenarios like police, medical rescue, traffic control and more.
HorrorFace down paranormal entities, deranged killers, virus outbreaks – bring an element of horror to the battlefield.

With so many options, you could play Arma 3 singleplayer for years and still not exhaust all the content. Scenarios are available through the Steam Workshop, Arma 3 launcher, and sites like Armaholic or Play withSIX.

The extensive catalog ranges from small quick engagements to mammoth multi-part campaigns. Serious military simulations exist alongside casual zombie survival missions. Customize scenarios further via the difficulty settings and optional parameters.

I often browse the latest singleplayer missions when I just want a quick combat fix. In minutes I can find a new locale to wage war in against deadly AI enemies. With thousands of scenarios spanning different eras, factions, objectives, and styles, there is unlimited replay potential.

Tailored challenges

For those seeking a more structured progression, Arma 3‘s in-built challenges offer ways to master its mechanics through focused engagements. These scenarios are designed around specific themes and gameplay skills:

  • Bootcamp – Series of 7 missions teaching critical controls like movement, firing weapons, throwing grenades, using optics and more. This is the perfect place to learn Arma 3‘s basics.

  • Special Operations – Stealth paramilitary operations behind enemy lines. Showcases sneaking, ambush tactics, long range sniping and night operations over 8 missions.

  • Combat Operations – All out conventional warfare across 8 challenges. Use tanks, helicopters and infantry to assault enemy strongholds and secure towns.

  • Marksman – Advanced optics, wind measurement, ballistics and more over 5 specialized challenges to improve your aim and sniping.

  • Helicopter – Take control of various rotary wing aircraft to transport troops, provide support and engage hostile forces across 5 levels.

  • Divers – Swim through underwater caves and salvage wrecks while avoiding mines and hostiles in 4 unique challenges.

  • Unusual – Showcases some of Arma‘s wilder elements like UAV piloting, anti-tank combat and base jumping across 5 missions.

You earn medals and scores based on performance in each challenge. I love returning to beat my previous times or up the difficulty for extra pressure. They are great bite sized missions to sharpen particular skills.

Completing these challenges trains you in aspects of Arma 3‘s sandbox you might otherwise overlook. I improved my flying immensely thanks to the helicopter challenges for instance. With 36 levels across multiple disciplines, there is something for everyone.

Dynamic singleplayer gameplay

Beyond scripted scenarios, Arma 3 offers procedural gameplay modes that can generate endless missions on demand:

Zeus

This mode has you take on the role of a Game Master, setting up missions for AI units to complete. As Zeus you have powers like spawning units, creating objectives, and scripting events on the fly. Zeus presents the ultimate sandbox for creating your own singleplayer missions dynamically.

Some key features:

  • AI soldiers that behave intelligently to carry out assaults, patrols and defensive operations.
  • Options to take direct control over units temporarily to position them perfectly.
  • Diverse mission modules like ambushes, patrols, stronghold defense etc to combine for unique missions.
  • Thousands of structures, props, vehicles and units at your disposal for crafting missions.
  • Real time editing so you can dynamically adjust the mission as it unfolds.

With Zeus, no two missions play the same. As game master, you direct the ebb and flow of the battle. I’ve spent countless hours just experimenting with different setups and strategies using Zeus’s powerful toolkit.

Antistasi

In this popular dynamic campaign mod, you take charge of a guerilla resistance force and ignite a people’s war against an occupying military. Key features include:

  • Generate missions like raids, sabotage, supply ambushes, defending bases dynamically based on faction control.
  • Recruit locals to bolster your guerilla force and gain resources by helping civilians.
  • Manage relationships with NATO allies, securing their support and supply drops.
  • The enemy evolved their tactics and strategy in response to your operations.

No two insurgencies play alike. You choose how aggressively to prosecute the war, balancing risks vs rewards. I’ve played 40+ hour campaigns just in Antistasi. The dynamic nature ensures it never gets repetitive.

vindicta

This ingenious AI commander mod generates endless organic missions for you. Features include:

  • Realistic dynamic skirmishes between AI factions, independent of your actions.
  • An AI commander evaluates the battlefield situation to determine optimal missions for you like recon, raids, reinforcing allies etc.
  • Radio comms from your commander provide situational awareness and updates.
  • A strategy layer sees your faction expand territory and build bases dynamically based on successes.

vindicta creates a war that rages on even without you. I’ve spent endless hours embedded within the persistent battles it generates. That sense of an ongoing larger conflict makes your role feel more authentic.

Mods to blow your mind

Arma 3’s incredible modding scene expands the singleplayer possibilities exponentially. Here are some of my favorite mods that enhance the solo experience:

  • DUWS -persistently generatesDynamic Universal War System scenarios across the entire map. Choose your insertion and try to control the entire island.

  • Lambs Danger FPS – adds random infantry patrols, checkpoints, hideouts etc for more lifelike enemy behaviors.

  • VET_Unflipping – realistically corrects flipped vehicles so your missions don‘t get derailed easily.

  • Enhanced Movement – expands movement with new stances, rolls, ledge grabbing and more for added immersion.

  • Ravage – scavenge supplies and survive alone or build AI squads in a post apocalyptic world.

  • KAT – Medical Systems – adds advanced wound simulation and medical systems for hardcore combat.

And that‘s just the tip of the iceberg! There are mods adding new vehicles, weapons, terrains, missions and mechanics on a daily basis. I have over 200GB of mods which continually increase Arma 3‘s singleplayer scope.

Conclusion

In summary, Arma 3 offers numerous avenues for singleplayer and solo gameplay via its official content and lively modding community. With multiple campaigns, hundreds of scenarios, tailored challenges, dynamic modes and total conversion mods, you‘ll never run out of things to experience by yourself in Arma 3‘s sandbox. This is a game that can be enjoyed just as much alone as with friends online.
