Growing up, Mexican Hot Chocolate from Alfonso’s in La Jolla (sadly, now closed) was a favorite treat. So, in honor ofAmerican Heart Month, I created atasty, heart-healthy creamy almond butter recipe flavored with chocolate, cinnamon, and a few other wholesome ingredients.

If you’re a chocolate lover, you’ll want to make a big batch to store in your fridge when the chocolate craving hits!

  • Almonds. I use unsalted, raw almonds. For a more Nutella like version, use hazelnuts. Or, try making with any favorite nuts!
  • Raw cacao powder. Choose high-quality unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder like Navitas Organic Cacao Powder.
  • Vegetable oil. Choose one high in monounsaturated fat like expeller-pressed high oleic sunflower oil, almond oil, or macadamia nut oil.
  • Pure maple syrup. Honey or date syrup may be used instead.
  • Salt. Add a sprinkle of sea salt to taste
  • Optional. For extra indulgence add in any of these optional ingredients including vanilla extract, milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips, gluten-free graham crackers, orange zest.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw whole almonds
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, almond oil, macadamia nut oil, or high oleic expeller pressed sunflower oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Process until smooth consistency is achieved, scraping down side periodically as needed. Store in refrigerator until ready to eat.

Notes

Ingredient Swaps:Swap almonds w/ any other nuts; try honey or date syrup in place of maple syrup; replace cinnamon with cardamom or ginger-or try them altogether!

Optional ingredients: vanilla extract, chocolate chips or crushed gluten-free graham crackers (stirred into almond butter), orange zest.
