Parents Guide The Idea of You Movie Review | Safe for Kids
I was today years old when I found out that Anne Hathaway and I are the same age.
Not gonna lie I’m feeling a kindred connection to one of my personal favorite actresses – from the Princess Diaries to The Devil Wear Prada to an emotional Les Mis – Annie (all of her BFF’s call her Annie) and I go way back. And her filmography is more than just a collection of movies, but my own personal life history and a comforting friend. But when I heard that my bestie was faux dating a 24-year old boy band boy (try saying that 5 times fast), I got a little hot and bothered (or maybe that’s my perimenopause).
Surely a 40-year old dating a 24-year old wouldn’t cause such a film stir? But apparently Annie is stirring the rom com pot by taking on a popular pandemic romance novel – and adapting it for the Amazon Prime streaming screen.
In this The Idea of You Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, I’m breaking down the visuals, the story, a full TV-14 age rating explanation for violence, adult themes and language, and what kids’ age recommendation is suggested to watch in this new 2024 The Idea of You parents guide to the new Disney+ original show. A no-spoiler parent review of The Idea of You 2024, does Anne Hathaway still got what it takes to be a leading lady in a rom com? Or is she doomed to join the other “elder” perimenopausal women actors in Hollywood?
The Visuals
Visually The Idea of You is pretty straight forward in the visual department. No crazy camera angles or CGI technology. Though per usual I want everything in Anne Hathaway’s costume clothing. Her style is impeccable.
Photosensitivity Warning. For viewers prone to epilepsy and photosensitivity, The Idea of You has some possible scenes of bright flashing or strobing lights during concert filming. No dizzying camera angles or nausea inducing scenes noted.
The Story
Based on the popular romance novel by Robinne Lee of the same name, The Idea of You is a Prime Video original directed by Michael Showalter (“The Big Sick“) with screenplay written by Jennifer Westfeldt (“Kissing Jessica Stein“). The Idea of You is a 2024 Amazon MGM original film starring Anne Hathaway (“Interstellar“) as Solène, Nicholas Galitzine (“Red, White & Royal Blue“) as Hayes Campbell lead singer of boy band August Moon, along with co-stars Ella Rubin (“The Rewrite“), Reid Scott (“Veep“), and Annie Mumolo (“Bridesmaids“).
A whirlwind love story between 40-year old single mom Solène and 24-year old lead boy band hottie Hayes Campbell, this romantic comedy takes escapism and fantasy to the next level – with a dose of realism and honesty. Balancing the challenges of raising a teen girl and super stardom this unlikely couple seems doomed for failure. And that’s when Anne Hathaway steps in and takes control.
As if anyone had any doubts, Anne’s emotional and relatable performance sucker punches reality in the mix as we feel what she feels, think what she thinks, and ultimately love who she becomes. The chemistry between Anne and Nick – no one should ever doubt a 41-year old’s ability to still be able to “still got it.”
Don’t expect a life changing storyline – The Idea of You is pretty formulaic in substance and style. But tackling real issues like trust, divorce, family, social media, celebrity status, and shame – The Idea of You highlights an honest look at how life plays out But the real reality question is, is The Idea of You for kids?
The Idea of You R Rating Explained
Is The Idea of You Movie safe for kids? An Amazon Prime original film rated R? Should parents be concerned? It’s no secret that I am highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language??). And as we know, not all movie and TV age ratings are the same. As a parent, it’s been rather heartbreaking to witness how ratings have shifted over the years with a G-rating no longer an option to help guide parents.
PG ratings now oscillating between Turning Red intense to Christopher Robin calm, and even PG-13/TV-14 age ratings teetering on the edge of R or MA ratings (Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night, I see you!), there’s a wide range between the age of 0-14 years old for parents to consider. Having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or show is kid friendly – and safe for the whole family to watch together.
Why is The Idea of You rated R? In this The Idea of You Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, this 2024 Prime Video original movie from Amazon Studios is rated R for “some language and sexual content.” With film and TV ratings also unpredictable these days, having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or television show like The Idea of You is kid friendly. Violence/Suspense. The Idea of You is a romantic drama, get a grip. No violence, suspense, or peril in this Amazon Prime film. No worries there. There is one verbal reference to “serial killers” for humor effect.
Adult Themes. There is a mild to moderate amount of alcohol consumption in The Idea of You – including liquor (co*cktails), beer, and wine consumption. No one acts stumbling drunk. But there are verbal references to being “drunk” and “hungover.” No smoking noted. There are a couple of verbal drug references to “are you high” and being “given a gummy.” No actually drugs are seen or consumed.
The Idea of You only has one toilet humor reference to the “ASMR community who like to listen to people pee.” Intentionally for laughs.
Does The Idea of You have sex scenes? In short, yes. But as far as a sexy steamy sexual content only kind of film – The Idea of You is actually a lot more tame than I was anticipating. Sex is mostly implied. Filmed sex scenes are relatively short in duration – and no body parts are actually exposed. Clothes are taken off Multiple heavy kissing scenes are shown. Scenes of men and women astride the other vertically and horizontally shown as well as cuddling in bed with assumed no clothing. But nakedness is limited to mostly shoulders and up or thighs and down. Sex sounds are visually and audibly part of this romantic drama (including Anne seen with a hand over her mouth to cover her gasp). Sexy clothing is worn including visible underwear (men and women), see through dresses, sexy bathing suits (very little covered), dancing and visuals of men shirtless. But again – The Idea of You sex scenes are mostly implied – leaving most of the “sex” part to the imagination.
Sexual innuendo verbal references to being a “f–k boy,” a man’s “penis” and “d–k, “getting mooned,” “gets off,” “love to see you naked,” “screwing this kid,” being called “hot” and “hottie,” “slept with,” and confessions of love including “I love you” statements.
Other adult themes include getting pregnant marriage, cheating and lying in marriage, anger and verbal arguing and family issues associated with divorce, social media trolling, paparazzi stalking, and internet tabloids.
Language. Does The Idea of You have language? Yes, and stronger than disclosed. Foul language phrases and swear words are infrequent but include: 8 “f-ck,” (1 instance mouthed), 1 “d!ck,” 6 “sh*t,” and 1 “d@mn.”
Milder bad language phrases and insults in The Idea of You include: “twerp,” “piss,” “whor*,” (written) “penis,” “sucks,” “sucked,” “screwing,” “stupid,” “shoot,” “stupid,” “Lordy” (written) “g-d,” “oh g-d,” and “oh my g-d.”
The Idea of You Movie Age Rating for Kids
Is The Idea of You kid friendly?
With a runtime of 1 hour 55 minutes, The Idea of You 2024 Prime Video original movie from Amazon Studios runs a little longer than usual kid movies. Add in heavy dialogue and multiple sex scenes and kissing scenes – The Idea of You mostly likely would gross younger children out.
Along with strong language and adult themes, The Idea of You is a romantic drama geared towards adults than being for kids.

With strong language and sexual content, The Idea of You is an Amazon Studios streaming romantic drama that is geared towards adult viewers. I advise parents to prescreen the Prime Video original movie for sexual content, sensual innuendo, and strong infrequent language.
Considering the full R age rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend The Idea of You Movie to kids younger than the age of 15-16 years old. The Idea of You R rating is light for sexual content (mostly implied) but has enough sexy kissing scenes to keep things somewhat steamy. 
The Overall
It’s rom com escapism at it’s best – and I bought the fantasy. The Idea of You Movie hits home as a 41-year old mom. Fantasy rooted in reality – The Idea of You constantly tethers you from taking the dream too far, but still allows you to immerse in the rom-com world in an ideal escapism for a cozy night in.
Don’t worry husband, I won’t be running off with a 24-year old singer. Is The Idea of You for kids? Not a chance – unless your kids have read the romance novel. But as far as an easy-to-watch romantic drama goes, Annie and I are still besties – but now even more relatable on a 40+ year old “still got it” level.
